신라 마지막 임금인 경순왕 6년(932)백양선사가 처음 세웠으며, 백양선사의 행적에 관해서는 알려지지 않고 있으며, 그 후 이조 19년 숙종 4년에 연전선사가 중건하고, 영조 29년에 설인선사가 다시 중건하였으며 1922년 보현스님이 새로지어 현재에 이르고 있음.
