신라시대에 창건한 것으로 전해지고 있으며 원래 사찰 이름은 천곡사였다고 한다. 옛 건물은 한국전쟁시 소실디었다. 현재는 법당과 요사채만이 남아 있다. 사찰 북쪽 산사면에는 신남리 절뚜루 사지터에서 이전한 삼층석탑과 석불좌상이 보존되고 있다.
