雪嶽山 尋源寺 寺蹟記』와 한용운의 『百潭寺 寺蹟記』에 의하면 백담사는 서기 674년 신라 제28대 진덕여왕 원년에 자장율사가 설악산 한계리에 한계사로 창건하고 아미타삼존불을 조성·봉안하였다. 한계사로 창건후 1775년(영조 51년)까지 운흥사, 심원사, 선구사, 영취사로 바뀌다가 1457년(세조 3년)과 1783년(정조 7년)에 最鵬과 雪潭이 백담사라 개칭하여 현재까지 전해지고 있다.
