우리나라 육지의 최남단에 위치한 사찰로서 749년(경덕왕 8년)에 義照가 창건한 것으로 전하며 미황사 사적비에 창건설화가 나와있다. 1597년(선조30년)정유재란으로 대웅전이 소실되자 1598년 晩善이 중건. 헌종 1년(1660년)에 3창하고 女右가 중수하여 오늘에 이름. 대웅전, 응진전, 명부전, 요사채등이 있으며 石槽幢竿支柱, 浮屠群, 사적비 등의 성보문화재가 있음
