ㅇ전설에 의하면 신라 56대 경순왕의 딸 덕주공주와 마의태자가 신라의 멸망을 슬퍼하여 금강산으로 가는 도중에 누이인 덕주공주는 월악산에 덕주사를 조성하여 남쪽을 바라보도록 마애불(磨崖佛)을 만들고, 마의태자는 석굴 가람을 조성하여 북쪽을 향해 덕주사를 바라보게 하였다고 한다. ㅇ충주 미륵대원지는 현재 미륵세계사에 의해 불법의 등불을 이어가고 있다. 미륵세계사는 1960년에 창건되었음
