미륵사는 신라 성덕대왕 2년에 창건된 사찰로, 최근 요사채 중축 중 상량문이 발견되어 그 사실을 뒷받침하고 있다. 불행히 1948년에 대웅전이 소실되었으나 최근에 개축하였다. 1982년 인근 산록에서 라말여초시기에 조각된 것으로 보이는 파손된 불두 및 석부재가 발견되어 화제가 되었다. 사명대사가 사용하였다는 화강암 맷돌과 영규대사가 쌀을 씻었다고 전하는 석조 등 석조문화재가 남아있다.
