Recorded origin, in the register's own words

1200여년전 신라 원성왕(789~798)때 연희국사에 의해 창건되었고, 삼국유사에 의하면 영축사 주위 토굴에 연희스님이 은거하면서 수행을 하고 있었다. 원성왕이 이 사연을 듣고 청하여 국사에 봉하려하자 연희스님이 암자를 등지고 가던길에 문수보살과 변재 천녀를 만나 인연을 어길 수 없음을 깨닫고 국사가 되었다. 노인(문수보살)을 만났던 곳에 지은 암자를 보현암이라 하였다.
