창건연대에 관한 정확한 기록은 없지만 운흥사 산내암자였음 운흥사 사적기가 쓰여진 18시게 초반에는 운흥사 본사 경내에는 30여동의 당우가 있었고 20군데의 산내 암자를 거르니고 있었으며 당시의 문성암은 문수암으로 불리우다가 후에 문성암으로 개명하였음
