Recorded origin, in the register's own words
신라진평왕 39년(617년) 원효대사가 창건하여 "관음사"라 하였고, 헌강왕 원년(875년)에는 도선국사가 중창하여 "갈옥사"라 한후, 고려 정종 원년(946년)에 선각대사가 삼창하고 "모옥사" 라 개칭 하였으며, 그 후 조선 명종 10년(1555년)태감선사에 의해 현재와 같이 "무위사"로 부르게 되었다.
