신라 신문왕 때 의상조사가 창건하였다고 전함. 기록에 의하면 강산사가 옮기면서 원갑사로 개칭된 것으로 보임. 영광불갑사, 영암도갑사와 더불어 3갑사라 불림. 다도해를 눈앞에 두고 있는 임해사찰로서 신안도서의 관문에 위치.
