명봉사(鳴鳳寺)는 소백산맥(小白山脈)의 깊고 고요한 명봉 골짜기에 위치하였으며, 신라 헌강왕(憲康王) 원년(875) 두운대사(杜雲大師)가 창건하였다. 융성(隆盛)하던 시기에는 그 규모가 백 여동이 되었다고 하는데 여러 차례의 병화(兵火)와 6.25사변(事變)으로 거의 소실(燒失)되었던 것을 전후(戰後) 중건하여 지금은 대웅전, 약사전, 요사채, 칠성각, 부도, 5층석탑, 내원암, 법화암 등이 있으며, 문화재(文化財)는 경청선원자적선사능운탑비(鏡淸禪院慈寂禪師凌雲塔碑-유형문화재 제3호)와 문종대왕태실비(文宗大王胎室碑-유형문화재 제187호)가 있다. 또한 사내에는 소나무, 전나무, 느티나무 등 큰 나무가 하늘을 가려 한여름에도 추위를 느끼게 하며 계곡에는 맑은 물이 흘러 여름철에는 피서지·산책로로 각광을 받고 있다.
