Recorded origin, in the register's own words
대한불교조계종 제7교구 본사인 수덕사의 말사이다. 1017년(고려 현종 8) 지선(知禪)이 창건하였다. 창건 후 임진왜란 전까지 다섯 차례 중수하였다고 하며, 1589년(조선 선조 22)에 중창하고 1628년(인조 6)에도 중수하였다. 임진왜란과 병자호란 때 활약한 정충신(鄭忠臣) 장군이 당파싸움에서 밀려나 1633년 충청남도 당진에 유폐되었을 때 이 절에서 40일간 머물렀다는 기록이 전한다. 1801년(순조 1) 불에 타 없어진 것을 두열(杜悅)이 중수하였고, 1857년(철종 8) 묘열(竗悅)이 중수하여 100여 년간 사세가 유지되었다.
