신라선덕여왕 8년에 해호스님이 여왕의 명을 받아 창건한 것으로 월성을 바라보면서 왕실의 융성을 빌었다가 망월사가 됐다고 함. 고려시대의 혜거,영소대사와 조선시대의 천봉,영월,도암 등 많은 명승들이 배출되었으며 근대의 도인이라 불리우는 만공,한암, 성월 등 선지식들이 지내던 곳임
