384년(백제 침류왕 원년)에 창건되었다고 하나, 또 다른 기록에 의하면 673년(백제무왕)대 건립되었다고 전함. 그후 조선 초 이성게가 임금이 되기전 나옹선사와 그의 제자인 무학대사에 의해 중창 1596년 저유재란때 소실된 것을 지홍대사와 원충대사가 다시 중창하였으나 6 .25동란으로 완전소실 1954년 청신여사 김인숙의 시주와 그의 신도들의 도움으로 대웅전과 삼성각 요사채 건립 만일사라는 명칭은 무ㅏㅎㄱ대사가 이성계를 임금의 자리에 오르게 하고자 만일동안 이곳에서 기도를 올렸다고 하는데에서 유래됨. 원래 무학대사가 중창한 만일사는 현사찰이 있는 곳에서 북쪽으로 200여 미터 올라가 위치하고 있었다고 하나 1954년 현 건물을 중찰할 때 지금의 위치에 축조하였다.
