Recorded origin, in the register's own words
- 서력기원 643년(불기 1187년) 신라의 고승자장율사가 창건하였으며, 보철화상 때 설법을 듣고자 모인자가 계곡을 가득 메운 것이 마(麻)와 같다고 하여 마곡사 (麻谷寺)라 하였다고 함. - 웅진인이며 신라말기의 승려인 보조선사에 의해 중건되고 고려시대 명종대 보조국사가 중수, 그후 범일, 도선, 긱순등이 중창을 계속하여 오늘에 이르고 있음. - 조선시대에는 세조가 신행하여 영산전(靈山殿)이란 3자을 하사하였다는 내용이 전함.
