ㅇ구전에 따르면 신라 때 창건되었다고 한다. 실제로 이곳에서 출토된 유물이 통일신라 말에서 조선 중기에 이르기까지 다양하여 구전을 뒷받침한다. ㅇ각종 지리지나 역사서에는 절 이름이 나오지 않지만, 《여지도서(輿地圖書)》에는 남수원불당(南水院佛堂)이라고 기록되어 있다. 지금도 인근에서는 남수원절이라는 이름으로 통하는 것을 보면 예전에는 남수원사라고 불렀음을 알 수 있다. 《여지도서》가 편찬된 조선 후기 영조 때에는 승려 2명이 머물던 작은 암자였다. ㅇ1592년 임진왜란 때 불에 타 없어진 것을 약 100년 뒤 성(成)씨 문중에서 중창하고 매몰된 불상을 발굴하여 모셨다고 전한다. 이후 연혁은 전하지 않으며, 1949년 중수하여 오늘에 이른다.
