천태산 중턱에 자리잡고 있으며 서혈사, 남혈사, 북혈사 등과 더불어 공주지역의 4혈사로 전해온다 東穴寺는 일명 銅穴寺라고도 한다. 이 절이 언제 세워졌는지에 대한 기록은 없으나 창건을 전하는 말로 원효대사라는 의견이 있어 1400년전으로 추정되며 원효대사가 수련했던 장소로 전해지는 사원지가 있음 현재 절터에는 조선후기의 것으로 보이는 2동의 건물지와 고려시대의 것으로 추정되는 3층석탑, 조선시대의 부도가 남아 있으며 절터 뒤편 암벽에는 자연동굴 형태의 동굴이 남아 있음
