동해사는 상주시 서곡동 722-3번지에 있다 일명 寒山寺 라고도 불리는 이 절은 식산의 고수대(高秀臺)밑에 자리잡았는데 1398년(태조7) 무학대사가 "상주는 지형이 행주형(行舟形)이어서 높은 곳에 집을지어 주읍(舟揖)의 역할을 해야 안정하다" 하여 지은 절이라 한다
