724년(신라 성덕왕 23년)에 상원조사가 암자를 지었으며, 회의화상이 상원이라는 절로 확대시킴 신라멸망시 유차달이 신라의 시조와 박제상을 제사하기 위해 東鶴寺를 건축하였고 사찰이름도 東鶴 이라 칭함 전설에 의하면 동쪽에 학 모양의 바위가 있어서 동학이라 하였다 함 921년(고려태조 4년)에 도선국사가 중건하고 1864년(고종 즉위년)에 보선선사가 여러 건물을 새로 지었으며 동학사는 이때 지은 건물을 바탕으로 하고 있음 1960년 승가대학을 개원하였으며 전국의 많은 비구니들의 교육의 전당이 되고 있음
