신라 49대 헌강왕 2년(876) 도선국사가 현위치보다 위쪽에 초창하였다고 하며 전주 4고찰중 동쪽에 위치하여 동고사라고 부르고 있음. 동고사의 후면에는 한 스님이 좌선수도하고 있는 모습의 자연석이 있어 이를 속칭 중바위라고 하였고 승암산이라 부르는 것은 이런 연유임. 1984년 전라북도 문화재자료로 지정 보존관리되고 있음
