신라 헌덕왕 2년(810년)신라고승 지월선사가 창녕읍 술정리 인왕사를 창건할 당시 이곳 도성암도 건립하였음 그후 임진왜란때 전소 하였으며, 그 이후200여년이 지나 산세가 극험하고 풍수리지가 불순하며 읍민에게 각종 재난이 끊이지 않으므로 이를 막기 위하여 읍민의 노력으로 건립(중수기문에 의하면 희경8년 발해1803년) 하였다 한다 그이후 중수한 기록은 미상임
