순천시 상사면 운동산에 위치한 도선암은 신라말 도선국사가 풍수지리설에 따라 사슴형태인 순천시내의 남산을 보호하기 위해 호랑이 형국 운동산의 호랑이 입에 해당하는 자리에 피해를 막고자 청건한 비보 사찰로 전해지고 있으며 조선 헌종 4년(1838년)과 헌종 15년(1849)에 사찰을 중건한 중건기록이 전하는 오랜 역사를 지닌 사찰이다.
