신라 경문왕 2년(862년) 도선국사가 창건하여 호국불교의 이념을 면면히 계승해 오면서 이조말 광무 8년(1904년)에 국가 기원 본찰로 지정받은 대사찰이며, 신라때부터 현재까지 한국불교의 변천사를 겪어온 유서깊은 사찰이다.
