서기 360년경 창건하여 고려 광종 19년 혜거국사가 중수하여 칠성암이라 칭하였음. 임진왜란으로 소실된 것을 광해군 12년 중수하고, 효종 4년 기성대사가 중수하였으며 철종 4년 중수하여 도덕암이라 개명하였음.
