신라 태종 무열왕 4년 창건되어 덕산사라 이름 하였으며 진성여왕2년 무염국사가 상주 많은 대중의 정진처였으며 만력 37년(1609년) 원인모를 화재로 전소된 후 절터는 마을주민의 전답으로 된것을 1959년 원경스님이 매입 덕산사 입지에 내원사를 창건하여 오늘에 이름.
