염불암은 고려태조 왕건이 고려를 세우고 926년 남쪽을 치기 위해 지나던중 능정대사를 만나 절을 지어드리고 안흥사(安興寺)라 칭하였으며 어느 시기엔가 염불암으로 바뀌었다. 조선 태종7년 관악산의 산천기맥이 한양의 백호라하여 사찰중건시 염불암도 중창이 됐으며 철종때 도인스님이 칠성각을 지은후 1904년 중수와 1968년에는 5년의 불사끝에 미륵불을 완공하였다.
