신라때 원효대사가 창건하고 미륵부처를 조성후 망해암이라 하였으며, 조선태종7년(1407년)에 중수되었고 순조3년 홍대비의 중수와 철종14년에 대연화상이 다시 중수를 하였다. 전설에 세종때 인천 앞바다 팔미도 부근서 배가 뒤짚힐 지경에 배를 안정시킨 스님이 망해암 부처님이라 하여 대왕께서 매년 한섬씩의 공양미를 보냈다고 한다.
