1930년 흥룡사의 김승인스님에 의해 창건되었으며, 신증동국여지승람 충청도 옥천 사찰조에 ‘건천사와 대성사는 모두 동림산(東林山)에 있다’는 기록이 나오는데, 두 사찰 모두 조선 초기에 유명했던 사찰인 동림산(대성산이라고도 함) 대성사의 명맥을 잇기 위해 건립되었다
