557년(신라 진흥왕34년)에 창건 소작갑사 칭함 진평왕 때 중창하고 고려시대 박곡리에서 현 위치로 이건 왕실 대비가 수양 차 이곳에서 오랫동안 기거해 대비사로 개칭하였음.
