신라시대 천성산은 내원사와 88개의 암자가 있어 불교의 성지였다고 한다. 내원사의 안적암은 신라의 고승 원효대사가 세웠다고 하며, 그후 중수 재건을 거듭하여 조선시대에 이르렀으나 임진왜란때 병화로 소실된 것을 영훈대사가 중건한 것으로 오늘에 이르고 있으며, 지금은 비구니의 수도장으로 이름난 사찰임.
