1906년 윤고경 스님에 의해 돈내코기도절이라는 명칭으로 수행하던 토굴이었으나, 1970년 혜국스님에 의하여 암자주변 부지를 매입 무문관을 개관하면서 남국선원으로 사명을 개칭함
