남고산성 중턱에 자리한 남고사는 신라 문무왕 8년(668) 보덕대사의 상도제자인 명덕화상이 창건하였음. 원래는 남고연국사라 하였으나 현재 남고사라 부르고 있으며 전주사고 사찰중 남쪽에 위치하고 있음. 절터인 남고사지는 1985년 기념물로 지정 보호 관리되고 있음 .
