절은 신라 진평왕 10년(588)에 운달조사가 창건하여 운봉사라 불리었으며, 대한불교조계종 제8교구 말사로 4개의 산내 암자와 6개의 암자유지가 남아 있으며, 사찰역사에 비해서는 문화재가 빈약하여 문화재 자료인 대웅전이 있고 숙종 29년(1703)에 조성된 괘불탱화, 지옥의 염라왕청에서 죽은이가 생전에 지은 선악의 행업이 나타난다는 업경대, 후불탱 등 120여점의 불교유물을 소장하고 있다
