삼봉산 중턱에 있는 오래된 절로서 뒷산이 금강산 같아서 소금강이라하여 금자를 따오고 산모양이 봉황새 같아 봉자를 넣어 금봉암이라 이름지었다. 칠성당 앞에 용바위가 있고 옛날 가뭄때 군에서 맨 먼저 이 바위에서 기우제를 지냈다 한다
