신라말 656(태종3년) 행호조사가 창건했다는 설이 있는 본 사찰은 신라 도선국사가 참배지로 인정했으며, 고려 보조국사, 서산대사가 수도 성취하였다는 구전이 있음 6.25동란때 소실되었으나 금대암 복구기성회가 조직되어 옛 모습을 되찾음
