의자왕 10년 무상스님이 창건, 1675년 숙정 1년에 현재의 자리에 세워졌으며 선행 사찰로 금동사란 이름이 전해져 온다. 현 금당사에서 서쪽으로 350m 지점에 고금당이라는 절터가 있는 것으로 보아 이곳이 최초의 금당사가 있던 터로 알려져 있다.
