고려 명종 무술년에 생윤화상이 산명계려한 이곳 도장에 암자를 창건하였고 건륭 17년에 성윤화상 8세손인 설군상인이 중건하였으며 혹서의 변화가 적고 쾌락하여 극락암이라고 하였다고 함
