조선 숙종 때 창건된 것으로 추청됨. 극락암의 전신인 용학암은 조선 숙종때부터 이어져온 사찰로 1944년 명선스님이 용학암 중건에 뜻을 두고 사찰명을 극락암으로 개칭하였다고 함
