신라 경순왕때 무착대사에 의해 창건되어 고문암이라 함. 당시의 유물유적은 남아있지 않다.조선조 태조 때 이 절에 동악단을 쌓아 동악신을 봉안하고 매년 원주,횡성,영월,평창,정선 고을의 수령들이 모여 제향을 올렸다고 한다. 1907년 벽하와 응송이 중창하였으며, 1945년에 자항이, 1974년에는 김용호가 각각 중수하였다고 한다. 봄과 가을에 호국대제를 봉행하는 동악제가 있다.
