-624년(백제무왕35년) 숭제법사에 의해 창건된 사찰로 노령산맹의 주봉인 영구산(혀재의 도집산 해발720m) 중턱에 위치 -1392년(조선 태조 원년) 학운선사가 중창 -구암사라 함은 사찰 동편 지점에 거북모양의 바위가 있어 그 이름을 따라 구암사라 명명하였음 -옛부터 유명한 대종사들이 주석하였던 곳으로 조선 영조때 화암종주 설파대사가 거주한 곳이며 이로부터 100여년간 우리나라 불교계의 화암종맥의 법계가 된 사찰임. 임진왜란때 병화로 전소외었으며 조선 헌종때는 유명한 명유인 노사 기정진 선생과 백파스님, 그리고 추사 김정희 선생등이 이곳에서 동거하면서 친교 수학하였던 사찰임. 백파선사의 설법으로 입산수도한 승려가 각처에서 운집하여 단문 중흥조라 불렀고 그 법맥이 고창 선운사와 정읍 내장사, 장성 백양사에 전법되었다.
