관음사는 1968년 3월 12일 주지 김정문이 이 지역에 위치해 있는 보현사의 산내 암자인 안불암 터에 창건한 태고종 사찰이다. 관음사의 옛터인 안불암은 용성지나 남원지의 보현사 편에 기록된암자로 일제강점기에 폐사되었는데 1958년 부터 주지 김정문의 부친인 김관용이 사찰 중건을 목적으로 부지를 매입하여관리해 오다가 1968년부터 불사를 시작하여 13년여만에 전통가람의 면모를 갖추어 1984년 구 불교재산관리법에 의거 한국불교 태고종 관음사로 불교단체에 등록하여 전통사찰로서의 기능을 다하고 있다.
