신라 제56대 진성여왕 9년(895년)에 도선국사가 창건한 후 이조시대를 거쳐 1924년 석주스님이 중건하고 1974년에 진성당 종하사가 주지로 부임 재차 중건을 시작하여대웅전, 용왕각, 심시불의 비문석탑을 세워 1977년에 준공하여 지금의 절이 됨.
