1945년 일본패전 광복을 축복하는 의미에서 건립, 광복암이라고 하였고, 1953년 과객 선각스님의 말씀이 사찰명은 불교이어야 한다하여 마음에 주저하고 있든 바, 어느날 밤 관세음 보살의 현몽을 입어 1953년 10월 부터 관음사라 개칭하여 현재에 이르고 있음.
