관룡사는 화왕산의 동쪽 구룡산(九龍山) 중턱에 위치하고 있으며, 통도사의 말사이다. 사찰을 창건할 때 화왕산 정상의 못 속에 있던 용이 구름을 타고 하늘로 올라간 것을 보고 관룡사라 하였다고 한다. 사적기』에 따르면 사찰은 394년에 창건되었다고 하나 확실하지 않으며, 용선대 석조여래좌상과 약사전 내 석조여래좌상의 대좌 명문을 통해 볼 때 통일신라시대에는 매우 번창한 사찰이었던 것으로 보인다. 신라 8대 사찰로 불리기도 하였다.조선 전기에 대웅전과 약사전이 건립되면서 상당한 중건이 이루어졌으나 임진왜란 때 약사전을 제외한 대부분이 소실된 이후 조선 후기에 중창되었다.
