신라 경문왕이 자정국사를 흠모하여 경문왕 국령으로 창건하고 공림사라 칭함. 임진왜란때 소실되었으나 숙종 14년 중건, 1950년도 공비토벌시 전소, 1954년도 주지 강법화 스님이 극락전을 신축한 후 1990년대에 탄성스님이 법당, 요사, 선원 등을 신축하였음.
