672년 신라 문무왕 12년 원효스님이 부귀산을 찾아 수도하며 머물때 창건. 고려때는 상림사로 불렸으나 사찰 주위에 수백년 묵은 거목들이 들어차 있어 고림사로 이름을 고쳤다.
