신라 진덕여왕 6년 자장율사가 창건(신흥사와 동시에)했는데 정확히 신흥사보다 먼저 창건. 1548년 중건, 고종 27년(1890) 응화스님이 삼성각 건립하여 현재에 이르고 있음.
