김반석스님이 창건하여 정성갑스님에게 인도,양대일스님이 1972년에 인도되었고, 2001년11월에 강상규스님에게 인도되었으며, 현재는 박혜경스님에게 인도되어 현재에 이르고 있음. 절 앞 큰바위에서 매일 새벽 닭울음 소리에 인근 마을 주민들이 깨어나게 되었다고하여 계원사라고 불려졌다는 전설이 있음.
