고려 개국 공신인 풍양 조씨의 시조인 조맹이 은거하면서 수양하던 중 약사여래를 친견하였다. 하여 그 후손들이 선조의 유적을 추모하기 위해 고려중엽에 절을 창건하여 견성암이라 이름을 붙인 곳이다.
